President's Message

Have you checked out our new AFRW website yet? Take a look! www.akfrw.com

If you go to the HISTORY link, you can learn about the first Republican women elected to Alaska’s Territorial Legislature sixty years ago. In the NEWS section you can read about former North Pole Rep. Jeannette James who is being honored at a farewell potluck in Fairbanks prior to her move outside next month.

If you think the information for your club looks a little sparse, why not offer to help your Club president keep us all up-to-date on your activities? I know for a fact that Republican women across Alaska are working hard this summer to staff fair booths, organize and assist with municipal election campaigns and recruit new members to our organization. It would also be nice to hear from some past and present Republican women legislators if any of you out there would be willing to write an article for our website.

Every successful organization depends on its volunteers to survive and thrive. If everyone does her part, the AFRW will again be positioned to play a significant and valuable role in the 2008 general election.

I hope everyone is enjoying the final warm days of summer. And mark your calendars so you won’t miss the CNN/YouTube Republican presidential candidates’ debate on Monday, September 17!

The ARWC had a very successful Summer Salad Luncheon event on July 12. This is our second biggest fundraiser of the year, after Lincoln Day. All Legislators, as well as conservative Assembly and School Board members are invited. Our members provide delicious salads of all kinds, as well as desserts. The event has been held at the home of Ermalee Hickel in the past, but has grown beyond the capacity for a private home. This year we held it a the Days Inn Conference Center.

We were honored to have Lt. Governor Sean Parnell attend and address the group on the importance of remembering our core Republican values. Legislators attending were Senator Gary Stevens, Senator Bert Stedman, Rep. Craig Johnson, Rep. Jay Ramras, Rep. Mike Hawker and Rep. Anna Fairclough. Also attending were Assemblyman Dan Coffey and School Board member Crystal Kennedy.

Guest Republican women in attendance were AFRW president Paulette Simpson, CCRW members Charlotte Richards and Chris Wyatt. Fairbanks RW member, Rhonda Boyles, came down for the luncheon as well.

Ardy Pozzi, Special events chair, organized a great event with the help of Marie Nash, Lavone Taber, Margaret Brown, Myrna Maynard and others.

August 1st Capital City Republican Women and Governor Sarah Palin hosted a reception at the Residence for a group cruising Southeast with The National Review including Judge Robert Bork, former Ambassador to the U.N. John Bolton, Dick Morris, Rich Lowery and others. It was a fantastic opportunity to meet some great conservative minds. On August 18th we’ll have our annual themed table luncheon. This year’s theme is Come to the Party, the Grand Old Party. In September we are working on the final plans for a lunch onboard a Royal Caribbean Cruise Line ship which is always a wonderful treat for our hard working members.

The First City Republican Women July meeting was held at the Best Western Landing Board Room with guest speaker Dist. 1 Senator Bert Stedman. We are thankful for Bert's continued efforts for the betterment of Ketchikan. The ladies decided to adopt the project "We Care" and are gathering soccer balls and foot wear. Our next scheduled meeting is Aug. 27th.

Fairbanks Republican Women are in the midst of the Tanana Valley State Fair. Our First Vice President Pat Fink is busy managing this event which so far has been beautifully coordinated. The Fair starts on the 3rd and runs until the 11th. On the 15th of this month we will be assisting at the annual Don Young BBQ. Our next general membership meeting is set for September 8th, 2007 10:00 AM at the Regency Hotel.

Kenai Peninsula Republican Women – Carol Brenckle, President

Summer on the Kenai is synonymous with “fundraising” and “fun”. KPRW member Mel Krogseng hosted a fundraiser for Senator Ted at Krogs Camp, Mel’s spectacular fish camp on the beautiful Kenai River. Jane Madison and her husband, Will, were there to help put up directional signs.

Jane Madison and Anita Necessary organized our successful garage sale in June. Thanks to our associate members, Will (Madison) and Mark (Necessary) who lent more than support. KPRW had a booth at the Kenai park strip following the July 4th parade in Kenai. We raised money with the sale of patriotic items. Our best customers were Republican elected officials, Mayor Dave Carey of Soldotna and Representative Kurt Olson. Members Dee Gaddis, Carolyn Gabbard and Diane DuPerron volunteered their services as did Duraney Rawls. Thanks again to Carolyn Gabbard and her daughter, Peggy, we were also able to have a booth at Soldotna’s Progress Days.

In August, KPRW will host a coffee to honor Senator Lisa Murkowski. This event will take place on August 14 from 8:30 – 9:30 a.m. at Dave and Linda Hutchings’ beach house. Charlotte’s has agreed to do the catering. KPRW has invited Governor Sarah Palin to be the guest of honor at a coffee to be held in her honor on Saturday morning, August 25th (before the start of “Industry Appreciation Day” – an annual event in Kenai). The “coffee” will be open to the public.

KPRW will also have a booth at the Ninilchik Fair. We are proud to be Republicans! And we are not afraid to show it!!!
