Palm Springs Convention
Twenty-two members of the Alaska Federation of Republican Women joined more than 1,800 other Republican women leaders from across the nation in Palm Springs, Calif., Sept. 27-30 for the 34th biennial convention of the National Federation of Republican Women. This was the largest delegation the AFRW has sent to a national convention in recent memory.

During the four-day event, which was one of the largest national gatherings of Republicans this year, registrants participated in leadership training seminars, campaign management schools, and political and policy workshops taught by nationally-recognized experts. We heard from Republican leaders, elected officials, national security experts, authors and other notable guests, including Republican presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani. Other Republican presidential candidates were invited, but did not attend.

In addition, 765 delegates voted in the organization’s Republican presidential straw poll featuring nine of the candidates. Slightly more than 50 percent threw their support behind Giuliani, former New York mayor.

As one of the largest women’s political organizations in the country, the NFRW has hosted a biennial convention since its inception in 1938. In addition to participating in convention activities, our Alaska women enjoyed sunny weather, great shopping and wonderful outdoor dining experiences. Best of all, AFRW members from Kenai, Soldotna, Fairbanks, Wasilla, Palmer, Sitka, Juneau and Anchorage all had the opportunity to network with each other and begin solidifying the TEAM that will help elect Alaska Republicans next year.

The next NFRW will be in Orlando in September 2009.

On August 1, the AFRW's Juneau club, Capital City Republican Women hosted a reception at the Governor's House for the National Review editors, writers and celebrity guests sailing the Inside Passage. National Review writers Rich Lowry, Jay Nordlinger, Ramesh Ponnuru and Kate O'Beirne were joined by historian Victor Davis Hanson, former UN Ambassador John Bolton, political analyst Dick Morris, conservative legal scholar, Judge Robert Bork and National Review's publisher, Jack Fowler and former publisher, Ed Capano at the afternoon reception. Governor Sarah Palin graciously welcomed the visitors to Alaska's Capital City.

Former Fairbanks Rep. & FRW President Says Goodbye
After more than thirty years of living in Alaska, Jeannette James and her husband, Jim, are moving south to Oregon. The Fairbanks Republican Women and District 11 Alaska Republican Party have asked Ralph and Connie Seekins to open up their home to friends of Jeannette and Jim for a farewell potluck and give everyone a chance to say goodbye.

Jeannette James
The potluck will be held September 7th from 6:00 p.m. until 8:30 p.m. at the Seekins Home. We will post a map at a later date.

Jeannette grew up on a farm in Iowa, where she learned the values of hard work and honesty that would later define her career in the Alaska Legislature. In 1948, Jeannette met and married her husband, Jim. Together, they have raised three children and nineteen foster children. In February 2007, Jeannette and Jim celebrated their 59th wedding anniversary.

In 1975, after their family was grown, Jim and Jeannette packed up and moved to Alaska. In North Pole, they owned and operated a motel, and Jeannette opened an accounting and business-consulting firm.

In 1993, Jeannette was elected as a member of the Alaska House of Representatives, where she served for ten years. Notable legislation she authored and passed includes: Concealed Handgun permits, Landlord Tenant reform, Regulation reform, Fairbanks-Nome Railroad corridor, and the Alaska public building fund.

She served as Chair of the House State Affairs Committee for six years and as the House Majority Leader for two years.

After leaving the legislature, Jeannette was appointed by Governor Murkowski as an advisor for the Alaska Canada Railroad link and she served in that capacity for nearly four years. She also recently served as President of the Fairbanks Republican Women's Club and the North Pole Rotary.

Mrs. James always treated everybody with equal respect and fairness.
